The APSI San Gabriel has its root embedded in College Board and Advanced Placement. The original directors, Claire and Chuck Pelton, taught AP English in Palo Alto, California for more than 4 decades.  After Claire left the classroom, she worked as the Educational Director for the College Board’s Western Regional Office. After this, she and Chuck started running their Summer institute. The Pelton’s eventually moved their event to Gabrielino High School, knowing that the principal, a former AP US History teacher, reader, presenter, and former Educational Manager for the WRO understood the value of helping new and experienced AP teachers prepare students. Her husband, a former Pre-AP Math presenter, served as the event manager. Several years ago, after losing her beloved Chuck, Claire finally decide to retire, she entrusted the summer institute to her manager, Paul, who continues the Pelton tradition of offering AP teachers the highest quality professional development.

Paul has taught mathematics in the San Gabriel Valley for over 30 years.  He currently teaches mathematics in the El Monte Union High School District, where he also serves as a math curriculum coordinator and department chair. In addition to working with Claire as the institute’s manager, Paul was a pre-AP consultant and content developer for the College Board.

The institute is held at Gabrielino High School in San Gabriel, California.  The Gabrielino Administration are supporters of the AP program.  The current principal served as an AP U.S. History consultant and reader and worked as an Educational Manager for the College Board. With the support of the Gabrielino High School summer staff, the student volunteers, the custodians and the San Gabriel Unified School District, the APSI San Gabriel is a positive experience or all participants.

For the past 7 years, the APSI San Gabriel has provided an opportunity for numerous teachers from the greater Los Angeles communities to attend a summer institute that is local. The institute has earned the reputation of offering outstanding presenters selected both for their subject matter expertise and belief that all motivated students can achieve in an Advanced Placement class. Their extraordinary presentations are guaranteed to keep their participants alert and involved from 8:00 to 3:45 each day of the Institute.
